Deep Rich Power of the Dark

4-17-2009

The Creation Story in the Christian Bible says that “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light, and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness” (King James Version). Bibles of other religions state a similar Creation story.

Last week, I wrote about the dark-night sky and how it was a marvelous metaphor to illustrate the unity of all life. Keeping that article in mind, I would like to further chat about the powerful significance of darkness. And naturally this darkness must never be confused with evil or the dark side.

We must consider in the above scriptures, and other similar scriptures, that the writer(s) is explaining to us something essential through “story.” Knowing this, we then must contemplate the deep darkness that existed before God created anything, or at least the world we know. If the “story” is based on truth, then God created everything out of the deep darkness, per the author. Out of the void of nothingness, or one could say potentiality, God created all life. It is simple to understand that all creation was birthed from the dark void, or womb, of life.

It is necessary for us to ponder that The Darkness has always been. It was first and before the beginning, not simply in the beginning. Darkness is the foundation by which God created (creates) from. Darkness makes it possible for light and without the support of darkness there is no light or any living thing. Darkness is the backdrop of all creation and contains all possibilities. It is the heart behind everything that exists.

Darkness is where life germinates, and awaits exposure to light in order to come forth. Like a fetus maturing in the darkness of a mother’s womb, a seed germinating in the dark rich mother earth waiting to burst through for light, or a new idea in our subconscious mind waiting for the right moment to present itself…. all springs forth from the great Sacred Dark Mother’s womb, which has always been here. Even God created the world from Wisdom’s womb.

Darkness is the deep Wisdom that God consulted in the book of Proverbs chapter 8, before bringing forth light to create this world. I suggest that you read and study this chapter. Sit a spell with this knowledge in the closet of your heart (darkness) and see what light will be revealed to you. As you read this chapter, note the letter “I” is capitalized. The fact that the author felt the need to capitalize the letter “I” sheds light on the Darkness, or Wisdom.

Why am I writing and bringing this to your attention? Because Sacred Darkness is key to our spiritual evolution. If God created out of Darkness/Wisdom, why should we do any differently? Since we are created in God’s image, or are expressions of God, then it stands to reason that we would have to create likewise.

With this powerful understanding, it behooves each one of us to spend more time inward in the deep rich darkness of our heart’s wisdom, so that we can create more light to bring into the world.
