WOMAN'S CLUB TEA TO FEATURE "WisdomDolls™"
Dismayed by dolls that project an ultra sexy image with their cleavage bursting through sparkly bras, micro miniskirts, stiletto heels, and pouty red lips? Looking for a more wholesome alternative for the young girl in your family? If your answers are yes, you will want to attend the next Tea at Van Wert Woman's Club on May 22 at 1:30 p.m.
Beverley Danusis, an ordained minister who has also had more than 30 years experience as an executive, innovator, and entrepreneur, will present her new line of collectible dolls that provide more positive images at the Tea. She has chosen to call these dolls The WisdomDolls™. Dressed in costumes appropriate to their personalities, the dolls feature varying types of faces and bodies. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is an entirely different doll from Demeter, the mother-nurturer, and their costumes feature luxurious fabrics and are appropriate to each goddess.
Ms. Danusis also has an impressive business background of more than 30 years. Her experience includes sales, strategic planning, product development and design, as well as effective management skills. She has also presented workshops and retreats for companies and organizations and written a bi-monthly column for Dupont Woman's Resource Center affiliation of the Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne. In addition, she has been a frequent television and radio talk show guest.
Although she spent much of her professional life in California, she now resides in Fort Wayne, where she is active in the community. She and her husband established the "Families IN Need" program to assist Fort Wayne families in extreme need, and she has also organized many projects to benefit active duty troops.
Savories and sweetmeats served at the Tea will reflect the theme of "The Many Delights of May," which was selected by Chairman Louise Tingley. Favors and decorations that have been chosen are also appropriate to the theme. Those who frequently attend the Teas know that the traditional scones, which vary in flavor from one Tea to the next, are accompanied by luscious lemon curd, Devonshire cream, and jam, plus the club's own special blend of tea.
Reservations are $12 per guest. Off-street parking is available behind the clubhouse, located at 654 S. Washington St., Van Wert. Because seating is limited, reservations should be made well in advance with Jean Owens, 419-238-6639, or e-mail joytrips@watchtv.net.

DOLL MAKER TO SPEAK MAY 22
Have you heard of the better alternative to Barbie and Bratz dolls, with their stylized, sexualized, and exaggerated bodies and faces? If your answer is "No," make your reservation now to attend the next Tea at Van Wert Woman's Club to learn about WisdomDolls™, the new line of dolls that provides a much more positive message to young girls.
Because impossibly voluptuous dolls with grossly disproportionate bodies and faces can lead a young girl to have unrealistic expectations of herself, Fort Wayne entrepreneur Beverley Danusis felt that it was time for a more true-to-life and inspirational line of dolls. Influenced by a self-help book entitled "Goddesses in Every Woman" by Jean Sinoda Bolen, Ms. Danusis determined to offer dolls based on the Greek goddesses. Danusis will be at the Tea on Thursday, May 22 at 1:30 p.m.
Each of the dolls represents a specific personality pattern with a special power that can be recognized and brought forth. For instance, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, and Demeter is the mother-nurturer. These prototype dolls have delicate faces, differing body types and are dressed in luxurious fabrics in designs more in line with Greek costume
Accompanying each doll is a mother-daughter workbook and parent guide to encourage discussion. More than just a doll, the WisdomDolls™product line of dolls and books allows girls to play with a product that reflects more accurately who they are or can be, and to develop a more realistic way to view themselves and their world.
Almost every family throughout the world, at one time or another, has been touched by the pain of not measuring up to some externally-imposed ideal. WisdomDolls™ provides a way to teach women and girls to be happy with who they are and how to discover the genuine beauty that lies within each one of us.
Van Wert Woman's Club's Teas are open to the public by reservation. Reservations, which are $12 per guest, may be made by calling Jean Owens, 419-238-6639, or e-mail joytrips@watchtv.net. Because seating is limited, reservations should be made well in advance. Parking is available behind the clubhouse, 654 S. Washington St. Off-street parking is available behind the clubhouse.

GODDESS REV BEV REINVENTING
By: Barb Sieminski
There was once a little girl who loved her Barbie doll. When she grew up she wanted to be just like Barbie, with a hot-to-trot figure and a handsome boyfriend.
But alas! As the girl matured, she realized life was not always kind. Because she was not gifted with Barbie's hourglass figure, she sank into a deep depression.
Multiply this girl thousands of times globally, and enter Beverley Danusis, chief creative officer, founder of WisdomDolls™ and proponent of a healthier self-image which would counteract the negative impact of toys such as Barbie and Bratz figures.

ARE YOU IN TOUCH WITH YOUR INNER GODDESS?
By: Steve Weaver Fort Wayne Woman Magazine
For a long time now, there have been little plastic symbols of womanhood peering out through transparent plastic windows at the real girls who peer back at them longingly.
Of course these dolls can’t see the girls who tug at their mother’s coattails in the aisle of the toy store in hopes of coaxing them into purchasing one of these dolls for their fantasy rendezvous with Mr. Perfect at the make believe beach at the foot of their bed.

DOLLMAKER WITH A DREAM DEFERRED
Source: Rosa Salter Rodriguez The Journal Gazette
Beverley Danusis used to work in the cosmetics industry, so when she lost a good friend to suicide and then struggled with her daughter, Beth, over issues involving body image, she realized that the messages our culture sends to women about beauty and self-esteem needed a major makeover.
"Look at that," she says, pointing to one of the popular Bratz dolls – one with an oversized head on an impossibly skinny body. No real woman, she says, looks like that – except perhaps, someone emaciated from an eating disorder.
"It teaches unrealistic body image," Danusis says. "And the name – Bratz! … She teaches you to be bratty, not to be confident. And this is what we're teaching our daughters!"
A few years back Danusis decided she could do better – and came up with an idea for a line of collectible dolls that would provide more positive messages.
Because she had been influenced by a self-help book from the 1980s called "Goddesses in Every Woman" by Jean Shinoda Bolen – and because her husband is a Greek-American – Danusis settled on the idea of using mythical Greek women as her theme.
It wasn't too much of a stretch – when she lived in California, Danusis had a business teaching workshops for women on the Greek mythological female archetypes. She now leads free classes on the topic at Sophia's Portico at Fort Wayne's YWCA.
For her WisdomDolls™, Danusis found an artist in California, Chris Love, who helped turn drawings into prototypes. Danusis' daughter did some of the original sketches to help her mother with the project.
Made to represent Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Demeter, the mother-nurturer, the prototype dolls have delicate faces and are dressed in luxurious fabric, such as satin and golden netting. They also come with what the industry calls "romance cards" that explain their stories and the positive aspects of character they embody.
But, like many entrepreneurs, Danusis found the course from idea to finished product doesn't always run smooth.
Financing the project herself with help from her husband, Danusis had hoped to have the dolls produced in time for last Christmas. Instead she is now enmeshed in a dispute with a manufacturer in China that shows no sign of ending soon.
The manufacturer hasn't been able to provide the collectible quality she's looking for – but has kept her master molds so she can't go elsewhere, she says. Ironically, she thinks she's had difficulty partly because she's a woman in the business realm.
"The Chinese aren't used to that," she says.
So tell me about this idea. What's your aim?
"I wanted to create a way to empower women. I want women to recognize their power. We've been talking about this forever, it seems, but it's still not an equal world."
How are these dolls different from standard fashion model dolls, like Barbies?
"When we designed them, we made sure they had women's bodies. They have hips. They have thighs. They have breasts. And every doll I have I put a little belly on, because women think we shouldn't have bellies but we do. We wanted them to be as lifelike as possible. And I have seven different faces and shapes of dolls, because I don't want girls to think all bodies have to be the same to be beautiful."
Well, these dolls are quite beautiful. It makes me wonder if they're for children or adult women as collectibles?
"A little of both. I call these edu-tainment toys because I want mothers and daughters to do things together. …You can get the doll that you most resemble or has the quality you feel you most need, or you can just collect them. I want them to be pieces of sculpture, art, really … I want museum-quality dolls."
What made you go to China to get them made?
"Well, one of the things I found out when I started this is that there are virtually no doll manufacturers left in the United States … unless they are little teeny mom-and-pop manufacturers working out of their home or garage. … The last one was in West Virginia – Lee Middleton – and I was working with them, but they went out of the doll manufacturing business while I was working with them. So I was forced to go to China."
So what happened?
"My mistake was I kept hoping that they could do what I wanted, and I kept encouraging them. I later found out that a lot of American companies don't use Chinese companies to manufacture, but they set up their own companies and just use Chinese labor. And I also found out that some companies pay to keep someone on-site for quality control. … The big thing there is you can't really sue them (without expanding a lot of money) if they renege on a contract … and they can take your idea and do whatever they want with it, and most American business people don't know that."
What do you need now to make this project happen?
"Right now, I just want my dolls set free. I feel as if I'm being held hostage! … I've been told that what I need is someone who speaks Chinese and English who can negotiate on my behalf."
You know, I was very interested because you said your daughter's struggle was part of why you started this. Can you tell me more about that?
"I started out on the catwalk … I was a model, and my daughter followed in my footsteps. I'm right now about a size 8, but if you look here, I have hips, and she looked just like this. And they told her to succeed she would have to lose weight. So she became a 4, and that still wasn't thin enough."
