Sophia and the Seven Goddesses: A Journey of Self-Acceptance by Ilene Satala and Beverley Danusis is based on Greek mythology.
The reader will join the heroine, Sophie, a pre-teen girl, on a trip as she travels to Greece for the summer with her grandparents where they are working on an exciting archeological dig. The outward journey to Greece and the excavating going on at the archeological site is reminiscent of the internal journey and uncovering that Sophie is doing inside of herself. When Sophie leaves home, she feels uncomfortable with the shape and size of her body and the color of her skin. She has a hard time seeing her beauty.
When she arrives in Greece, Sophie and her grandparents are taken to the Parthenon. Their guide, Nikos, shares the story of the Parthenon and how it used to be the home of the Goddess Athena, a 38-foot high golden statue made with 2,500 pounds of gold. Sophie experiences a connection with this place and has a vision in which she sees the statue of the Goddess Athena come alive, look her in the eye and nod. Sophie knows that something special and important has just happened. This is just the beginning of her journey.
